Happy Dog Beer Co. was created from a few life experiences, based on memorable moments in the life of Bender -- the labradoodle who became the inspiration behind Happy Dog Beer Co.
First came the the idea of 'dog beer'...
Sitting in the small pub of Cafe Frape in the Netherlands, a group of us were enjoying hand-picked ales recommended by the pub owner, Peter (that's him on our label!).
Then, came the joke that Bender wanted one too...
Next thing you know, Peter brought out a bottle of just that, a "beer" for dogs and Bender jumped to the occasion. Soon after enjoying our beers together, we started to think -why can't we provide beer for dogs back home in the US? It didn't take long after returning home to the states to work on answering that very question.
The actual name "happy dog beer co" comes from another moment...
Our time touring Europe was coming to an end. During the packing process, Bender kept jumping on the pile of clothes, knocking the items needing to be folded and packed back to the ground.
After multiple failed attempts, all packing attempts stopped. As a distraction, a rubber band was used to tie Bender's ears back like a ponytail, hoping to distract him from the packing process. This only got Bender more into interrupting the packing process. I gave up and instead, decided to snap a photo!
Sometimes I want to believe he understood that we were packing to go home and that he was just overjoyed.
But, in reality, Bender is truly just a "Happy Dog".

Irresistible Pooch Ale (IPA)
When Bender was a puppy he got a lot of attention-mainly because a Labradoodle wasn't a well-known breed at the time, but also because he looked like a stuffed animal and not like a dog! In Europe, people were amazed such a large dog existed. At least 15 minutes had to be added to every walk to get to our destination on time, because we would be stopped over and over again by people wanting to pet him. We even got chased by a tourist with a camera on a hiking trail! He came after us down the switchbacks, running to take photos of Bender! Sometimes, even Bender (who loves people) would try to avoid all this attention by ducking to my other side. But, with a face and a happy-go nature like his, it's understandable why he was and IS an irresistible pooch!
Dubble Dog Dare Ya
Bender loves being outdoors. He was a cautious puppy, but his world expanded as we traveled, and he began to take chances and trust that he could do things that most dogs don't ever get to do! We've kayaked down waterfalls in Croatia, ridden a ferris wheel in Germany, "skied" in the Swiss Alps, relaxed on gondolas in France, hiked the Alps in Austria, walked on sky bridges that are open to deep valleys, and even had back to back long international flights. Bender has done a lot! When he meets much more shy and timid dogs, he seems to be able to bring out the adventurous side in them too! The day we landed in Belgium, we went straight to a dog park. There he met a 13 year-old dog and they began to play. The owner kept saying, "I can't believe it, I can't believe it!" (He even ran into other people and told them, "I can't believe it!") His dog was playing with Bender -- playing like he hadn't played since he was a puppy! Bender seemed to tease him -- like he was "dubble" dog-daring him to play!
